„The beginnings of mechanical drilling in Romania” exhibition and symposium present remarkable personalities and events linked to this activity, both nationally and internationally.

In Romania, the first attempt at mechanical drilling dates back to the year 1861, in the Mosoarele area, near Târgu-Ocna, abandoned due to technical difficulties. Around the year 1880 Canadian drilling installations were first used. The Pensilvan System was introduced in 1883 by an American company, which executed the first oil field in Draganeasa. The hydraulic system through percussion was introduced in Romania in 1896 by the „Romanian United Petroleum Cy”, which drilled wells in Poiana – Verbilau, Poiana Campina si Baicoi. The rotating hydraulic system was tried in Romania in 1906 at Tetcani in Moldavia, without favorable results. The first oil field with positive technical conditions belonged to the „Romanian Astra”, situated in Filipestii de Padure (1912). From 1924 drilling using the Rotary table became general. Anton Raky, eng. Beldiman, Petre Otetelisanu, E. Mardarescu, Andrei Dragulanescu and Ion Basgan a.s.o contributed to the worldwide progress of drilling techniques.
