Night of Museums Program at the Arad Museum Complex:

ART MUSEUM (2-4 Gh. Popa St., second floor) Night of Museums Program: 20.00 – 01.00 The permanent art exhibition of the museum Kinema Ikon Workshop: Wunderkammer Painting and Chinese stamp exhibition, Adrian Ciceu Collection (Ovidiu Maitec Room) The exhibition consists of two distinct zones, which are organically related; one with modern Chinese painting and another with engravings, namely Chinese woodcuts made using the traditional technique. The modern Chinese paintings are made by master Ma Cheng Xiang (born in 1937), painter and renowned calligrapher, ex-Painting professor at the Central Academy of Drama in Beijing. His creation, with expressionist accents, provides a very up-to-date perspective over traditional contemporary Chinese art. Among the artist’s favourite themes there are also two of the major subjects of traditional Chinese painting: animals and landscape, respectively. Animals (cats, stags, foxes or owls) are displayed in a modern manner, with extremely reduced means of expression in appearance, but the painter manages to capture, with a subtle humour, the essential, the character of each animal. “The Chinese engravings displayed at the Art Museum in Arad are, most of them, woodcuts made between 1950 and 1970, following the aquarelles of some famous modern Chinese painters: Qi Baishi, Xu Beihong, Ren Bonian, Li Keran, etc. The favourite subjects of the paintings, that were made using the traditional woodcut technique, are cherished themes of the Chinese artists: animals, birds, insects and flowers” – Ioan Colta, museum curator.
