Statue „Venus of Tomis”
Statue „Venus of Tomis”
Despre eveniment
It was discovered during some town-planning works, in two stages: in 1973 the head and, 31 years later, in the spring of 2004, the body and right arm. This is how „Venus of Tomis” was discovered, a statue which is beautiful also in terms of artistic achivement. The statue, together with the pedestal and the support system, were carved in a single block of marble; the body is well proportioned and the face is divine. Venus of Tomis belongs to the Aphrodita Anadyomene type, in an unusual manner: the goddess is portrayed in the moment she gets out of the bath, with the garment left at her feet in front of her, while she is putting the bracelets to her ankles. Its stylistic and technical peculiarities allow dating this piece back to the middle of the 2nd century A.D.
White marble with small crystals, polished to transparency; statue’s height 0.565m; total height 0.827m.
